Sustainability through Participation, Empowerment and Decentralization (SPED II)

The Program namely, Sustainability through Participation, Empowerment and Decentralization (SPED II) primarily deals with three sectors

  • Natural Resource Management
  • Gender Development
  • Sustainable Livelihood Initiatives
The project aims at empowering people through participation and decentralization. The program supported by Save A Family plan is based on a strong belief that such a strategy is sustainable and result oriented. The following objectives have been incorporated in the program.

  • To promote the integrated approach in watershed management for addressing problems relating to the environment
  • To strengthen the capacity of the NGO to address the environmental issues on a long term basis at organizational and community levels.
  • To build resource team at DSSS level on environment impact assessment among the community to achieve environmental consciousness in the society.
  • To build a Resource Team at DSSS level on gender and facilitate gender concept among the community to achieve gender consciousness in the society.
  • To build a resource team at DSSS level on Good Governance and facilitate this concept among the community to achieve Good Governance in the society.
  • To promote income generating employments for women who are normally reliable, economically viable, financially feasible and sustainable
  • To conduct Entrepreneurship Development program (EDP) for the selected beneficiaries.

As part of the SPED Program, the KSSS has conducted the following programs

  • • Integrated watershed program
  • • Resource Team building
  • • Housing Program

JALATHARANG (Integrated watershed management programme)

KSSS has succesfully completed two drinking water projects at Anchiri in Idukki district under Jalatharang programme with the support of SAFPI under SPED 1 programme. At present KSSS is implementing Vadattupara watershed programme in Ernakulum district under SPED II programme with the support of SAFPI. The main objectives, of Jalatharang programme were house construction, house repairing, construction of double pit latrines, water and soil conservation trainings, natural resource management, promotion of agriculture, organic farming, kitchen gardens, construction of soak pits, well renovation and recharging ,backyard poultry, goat rearing and rain water harvesting

Building Resource Team

As per SPED Programme KSSS builds, one full fledged Resource Team from Credit Union members. KSSS will use thisResourceTeam for conducting training to Credi tUnion members on the following topics :-

  • Gender
  • Evironment
  • Good Governance

It is a programme of training to trainers. Through these training programmes KSSS builds one full fledged Resource Team consisting of 30 nos. of 6 groups. This group will conduct training classes in various credit unions and sanghams in our operational area.

Housing Programme

As per SPED Programme KSSS provides help to watershed beneficiaries for constructing houses in our operational area. Through JALATHARANG 2006-07, KSSS Vadattupara watershed programme and has also new houses for the watershed beneficiaries
